PROTECTING STEEL, PROTECTING LIVES
Specialist Fire-Protective Coating for Structural Steelwork
At SFDC, we bring specialist expertise and technical precision to every project. As your dedicated building envelope partner, we integrate our intumescent coating spraying capabilities seamlessly into your programme — delivering quality-assured systems on time, on budget, and fully compliant with the latest industry standards.
OVERVIEW
SFDC provides specialist intumescent fire-protective coating application to structural steelwork, protecting buildings and their occupants in the event of fire. Our trained, third-party certified applicators deliver both thin-film and thick-film intumescent systems in full compliance with BS 8202.
YEARS OF EXCELLENCE
Intumescent coating is a safety-critical application. In the event of fire, these systems expand to insulate structural steel from the heat, maintaining structural integrity and providing vital evacuation time. SFDC's applicators are FIRAS-certified, ensuring our installations meet the highest standards of competence and quality.
RANGE OF FEATURES
Water-based thin-film intumescent systems providing R30 to R90 fire protection for structural steel in internal and controlled environments, with a variety of decorative topcoat options.
Solvent-based epoxy intumescent coatings for external, offshore and highly corrosive environments, providing R60 to R120 fire protection for complex structural elements.
Both off-site (workshop) and on-site spray application services, coordinating with steelwork contractors, main contractors and structural engineers to suit the construction programme.
A range of topcoat colour options and finish qualities (matt, satin, gloss) allowing intumescent coated steelwork to be incorporated as an architectural feature in exposed steelwork designs.
IN DEPTH
Intumescent coating is a passive fire protection system applied to structural steelwork that expands in the event of fire to form an insulating char layer, protecting the steel from heat and maintaining structural integrity. SFDC provides specialist intumescent coating application — both thin-film water-based and thick-film epoxy systems — achieving fire resistance periods from R30 up to R120. Our FIRAS-certified applicators deliver both off-site shop application and on-site spray application, coordinating with steelwork contractors and main contractors to suit the construction programme.
Under the Building Safety Act 2022, building owners and contractors must evidence the competence of passive fire protection installers. SFDC's intumescent coating operatives hold FIRAS third-party certification, providing demonstrable evidence of competence and compliance. We maintain detailed inspection and test plans throughout the works, taking dry film thickness (DFT) readings at regular intervals and compiling comprehensive certification packs at handover to support the building's fire strategy and safety case documentation.
WE ENSURE QUALITY
Every intumescent coating project is managed by a FIRAS-qualified supervisor who maintains a detailed inspection and test plan (ITP) throughout the works. Dry film thickness (DFT) readings are taken at regular intervals, and all records are compiled into a comprehensive certification pack at completion.
SFDC intumescent coating applications comply fully with BS 8202, SCI P160 and manufacturer application guidelines. All works are carried out by FIRAS-certified operatives, and full third-party certification documentation is provided at handover, supporting the building's fire strategy and safety case.
